Bamboo Fan |

A fan fragment that is embellished with a stalk of bamboo is the basis of this study in Rozashi. Bamboo is an image that is found throughout Japanese art, daily life, in just about any aspect imaginable. It is steeped in symbolism as well as usefulness. It symbolizes long life. It is used as food, utensils, flooring, fences, in gardens, and is found in many genre of the Japanese arts. Thus, it is fitting to depict bamboo in this ancient form of needlework that dates from 700 A.D. The threads are silk, a mixed thread also named brocade, and metallic threads. The stitches in this study are: ni dan straight, ni dan double step, ni dan, step, san dan, the line stitch and the irregular stitch. The background is worked in Jizashi. The kit comes complete with special needle, ro attached to frame, all threads, nori sticking paste, instruction booklet with color image.
