Desert Flower is a much stylized floral motif. It is typical in Japanese art to simplify an object. This type of flower was imported from China to Japan. The flower is worked in the pale colors of the desert with the tendrils being a luscious green – symbolizing the hope for the rains to make the desert a green place. The stitches incorporated in this piece are: irregular stitch [similar to long and short in our embroidery techniques], ichi dan, ni dan and a step stitch, jizashi, as the background stitch. The challenge of this piece is to work this simple design in upright stitches in what is a 4-way design, but unlike Florentine/Bargello. The challenge in this piece is: Rozashi canvas does not allow for the stitches to be turned on their side because the stitch areas in the ro are rectangles not squares as in other gauzes. The motifs on the sides must be as symmetrical in appearance as the top and bottom motifs. The threads are traditional Rozashi threads. The kit comes complete with needle and nori sticking paste, all threads, ro attached to frame ready to stitch and the instruction booklet with color image.
